This year’s GAZPROM Germania Cup took place on 30 and 31 July 2010 in Berlin. Every year, this summer event sees GAZPROM Germania GmbH invite football teams from its international group companies to play in the German capital.
From its inception in 2007, the international football tournament has been a permanent fixture in the calendar at GAZPROM Germania GmbH, the German gas company with Russian roots. An established company event which is much appreciated by employees, the GAZPROM Germania Cup brings together company teams and the teams of company-sponsored football clubs to honour the international cooperation between the group’s partners and celebrate their common enthusiasm for this sport.
The group teams were drawn on the eve of the GAZPROM Germania Cup 2010 at the Steigenberger Hotel in Berlin. On the following day in the grounds of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, former Russian football legends from Zenit St. Petersburg, including Sergey Dmitriev and Aleksandr Kanishev, faced the veteran German teams Hertha BSC and FC Schalke 04, including former Schalke football greats Wilfried Landgraf and Martin Max. The football teams of the GAZPROM Germania group were composed of football enthusiasts at Gazprom Marketing & Trading Ltd in London, Bosphorus Gaz in Istanbul, KazRosGaz in Astana, Gazprom export in Moscow, WINGAS in Kassel, Vemex in Prague, and the tournament host, GAZPROM Germania GmbH.
In the match for third place, the team of London subsidiary Gazprom Marketing & Trading went head to head against the team of Russian parent company Gazprom export, led by team captain Aleksandr Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of GAZPROM’s Management Committee and Director General of Gazprom export. After an exciting penalty shootout, the Gazprom Marketing & Trading team emerged victorious from this match. The final was played out between FC Schalke 04 and the KazRosGaz team. Following another gripping penalty shootout, FC Schalke 04 managed to hold on to their title as champions of the GAZPROM Germania Cup 2010.
