The Russian Film Week in Berlin 2011

GAZPROM Germania Helps to Bring Russian Film to Germany

The 7th Russian Film Week presents first-class films from Russia in the German capital from 30 November to 7 December 2011. As a constant partner and supporter of the film festival, GAZPROM Germania is helping to bring the life, love, and laments experienced by the people of contemporary Russia to Berlin in the interest of strengthening intercultural relations between Germany Russia in the long term. With images that move, stories that excite, rousing tales of tragic fates, and illustrations of past, present, and future, Russian Film Week showcases new directions in Russian film and helps convey an image of modern Russia. Another distinctive feature of the festival is that films are shown in their original version with German subtitles, giving the audience direct access to the Russian language.

Following the establishment of Russian Film Week as an annual cultural event in New York and Paris, the festival has become recognized as the platform for Russian cinema in Germany’s capital. Russian Film Week is attended by the stars and und up-and-coming actors of the Russian cinema scene along with directors, producers, acclaimed film critics, and the giants of the cultural sector who come to showcase the latest Russian productions in Germany. This year’s festival is again being held under the patronage of the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Federal Republic of Germany, Vladimir M. Grinin.

Inspired by the theme of this year’s Russian Film Week programme, “Berlin-Moscow”, GAZPROM Germania and the festival organizers developed a concept that will promote collaboration between German and Russian film students: A fully-financed competition to produce a trailer for the Russian Film Week in Berlin that gave students at HFF Konrad Wolf Potsdam, a film and television school, the opportunity to put their cinematic skills to the test. The prize was a trip to Moscow to establish contacts at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography and develop film projects together.

The highlight of the festival will be the German and Russian premiere of the film Vysotsky: Thank You for Living (Wyssozski – Danke, für mein Leben), which tells a true story from the extraordinary life of 70s cult singer, poet, and actor Vladimir Vysotsky, the idol of an entire generation in the Soviet Union. With its stellar cast, the opening film promises to be the Russian film highlight of 2011.
