Haidach Natural Gas Storage Facility

In July 2007, the Haidach natural gas storage facility (Salzburg state, Austria), in which GAZPROM Germania has a shareholding, commenced operation.

Built in compliance with the most stringent environmental and safety standards, the first construction stage was completed in only two years and gave the storage facility an initial working gas volume of 1.2 Gm3 upon its commissioning in July 2007.

Under the second development phase, its storage capacity is currently being expanded to accommodate a total of 2.6 Gm³ of working gas. Following this expansion, the Haidach gas storage facility will be the largest such facility in Austria and the second largest storage facility in Western Europe.

The natural gas stored in this facility will be utilized mainly by both the parent company Gazprom export LLC and WINGAS to enhance European energy supply security.

Located in the vicinity of the German-Austrian interconnection point Burghausen, the Haidach natural gas storage facility is now connected to Kassel-based WINGAS TRANSPORT’s 2,000-kilometre natural gas transmission pipeline system. Since the Haidach storage facility is directly connected to the German supply system, the gas stored here can be used to balance seasonal fluctuations in gas demand in both Germany and Austria.
